Understanding the NDIS

Explained simply, so you can focus on what matters most.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia's national program that funds personalised support for people with a permanent and significant disability. Managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), it provides eligible Australians under 65 with a tailored funding plan - designed not just to meet daily needs, but to build skills, independence and community connection over time. To qualify, you must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, under 65, and have a disability that permanently and significantly affects your ability to participate in everyday life.

A diverse group of people with different skin tones and hair colors are stacking their hands together in a team huddle.

Your NDIS plan is divided into three funding budgets:

  1. Core Supports for everyday activities like personal care, transport and household tasks;

  2. Capacity Building for developing skills and long-term independence; and

  3. Capital Supports for larger investments such as assistive technology or home modifications.

You can choose how your funding is managed - by the NDIA, a registered plan manager, or yourself - and Astara Wellness works seamlessly with all three options.

As an NDIS participant, you are always in control. You have the right to choose your providers, change them at any time, raise concerns freely, and receive support that is safe, respectful and tailored to your goals. At Astara Wellness, upholding these rights is the foundation of everything we do. If you're unsure whether you qualify, want help understanding your plan, or simply want to know what's possible - our team in Canberra is here to help.
