Why community participation matters - and how the right support makes it possible

Social connection, a sense of belonging and active participation in community life are not luxuries - they are fundamental to human wellbeing. For people living with disability, however, barriers to participation can be significant. Transport challenges, accessibility issues, communication needs and a lack of appropriate support can all stand in the way of someone living a full and connected life.

This is why community participation sits at the heart of what Astara Wellness does.

What does community participation mean under the NDIS?

Under the NDIS, community participation supports are funded under the Core Supports budget and are designed to help participants engage in social, recreational, educational and civic activities in their communities. This can range from attending a local sporting club, taking part in a community art class or volunteering, through to simply getting out and about in your neighbourhood.

Innovative Community Participation is a separate NDIS support category that goes one step further - funding creative, flexible and non-traditional approaches to community engagement that might not fit neatly into standard support categories.

Why it matters

Research consistently shows that social isolation is one of the most significant risk factors for poor mental and physical health outcomes. People who feel connected to their communities report higher levels of life satisfaction, greater resilience and better health outcomes overall. For NDIS participants, community participation supports are not just about getting out of the house - they are about building a life that feels meaningful and full.

How Astara Wellness supports community participation

Our community participation supports are person-led. We start by understanding what matters to you - what activities you enjoy, what connections you want to build, what you want to achieve and then work with you to make it happen. Whether that means accompanying you to a weekly activity, supporting you to try something new or helping you build the confidence and skills to participate more independently over time, we tailor our approach to you.
