How to get the most out of your NDIS plan: a practical guide for participants

Your NDIS plan is one of the most valuable tools available to you as a person living with disability. But understanding how to use it effectively and making sure every dollar works hard for your goals - isn't always straightforward, especially if you're new to the scheme.

Here are five practical steps to help you get the most out of your NDIS plan.

1. Know your three budgets

Your NDIS plan is divided into three funding categories: Core Supports (for everyday activities), Capacity Building (for developing skills and independence) and Capital Supports (for equipment and home modifications). Understanding which budget to draw from for each support helps you avoid running out of funds in one area while another goes unspent.

2. Choose your plan management type wisely

Whether you choose agency-managed, plan-managed or self-managed funding affects which providers you can access and how much administrative control you have. Plan management gives you access to both registered and unregistered providers with the help of a plan manager - many participants find this the best balance of flexibility and support.

3. Review your plan regularly

Your NDIS plan is reviewed annually, but you can request an unscheduled review at any time if your circumstances, goals or support needs change significantly. Don't wait until your next scheduled review if something isn't working - you have the right to ask for a change.

4. Keep records of your supports

Whether you're self-managed or plan-managed, keeping clear records of the supports you receive helps you track your spending, identify what's working and provide evidence for future plan reviews. Ask your providers for invoices and service notes after each support.

5. Work with a support coordinator

If your plan includes Support Coordination funding, use it. A good support coordinator will help you connect with the right providers, navigate complex situations, get the most from your funding and prepare for your plan review. It's one of the most valuable supports in a plan.
